I am thrilled to share that cloudflare has acquired OutbaseThis is such a wonderful opportunity for us, and I want to explain how we have reached here, what we have made so far, and we are very excited about being part of the Claudflair team.
Databases are important for the manufacture of almost any production application: you need to maintain the state for your users (or agents), able to query it from many different customers, and you want it to be faster. But using a database is not always easy: designing a good scheme, writing displaying questions, making index, and customizing your access pattern requires a lot of experience. Easily add to expose your data through grock aPI that makes 'correct' way to clarify things, a great developer experience (from dashboard to CLI), and well… a lot of work.
The Outerbase team is already working on some major changes that the database (and your data) is seen, edited, and is imagined from within WorkerAnd we are excited to look at you something secretly what we will land because we meet to work.
When we first started the outerbase, we saw how complicated databases could be. Even experienced developers struggled with writing questions, indexing data and closing their data. Meanwhile, non-developers often feel lock out and could not reach the data they needed. We believed that there is a better way. From the first day, our goal was to make data accessible to all, irrespective of their skill level. While it began by building only a better database interface, it quickly developed in some more special.
Outerbase became a platform that helps you manage data in this way that makes you feel natural. You can browse tables, edit rows, and run questions without remembering the SQL structure. Even if you know SQL, you can use outerbase to dive deep and share your knowledge with your team. We also added visualization facilities, so the whole team, both technical and not, can see what is happening at a glance with their data. Then, with the growth of AI, we realized that we can use it to handle many complex tasks.
One of our more exciting offerings is Starbase, a SQLite-compatible database built on top of Cloudflare durable goodsOur goal was never to wrap an inheritance system in a bright interface; We wanted to make it so easy to start from day one with nothing, and the durable items of Cloudflare gave us a way to easily manage and spin the database, which someone needed. At their top, we provided automatic rest API, row-level safety, websocket support for streaming query, and more.
Our cooperation with Cloudflare began for the first time last year when we introduced a way to import and management of developers D1 Database inside the outerbase. We were influenced by how powerful cloudflave equipment are to deploy and score the application. As we worked together, we quickly saw how well our missions align. Cloudflare was creating the infrastructure that we wanted when we would start for the first time, and we were creating data experience, asking for many Cloudflare developers. This was eventually caused by a clearly clear decision of the outerbase that joined the cloudflair – it was just understanding.
Going forward, we will integrate the main features of the outerbase into the platform of Cloudflare. If you are using D1 or durable items, you will start watching features by showing outerbase in Cloudflare dashboard. Browsing and editing tables, new rest APIs, Querry Editor with type-forward functionality, real-time data capture, and other tooling more and more. We expect to see our data explorer in the last few years to show our data explorer.
As part of this infection, the hosted outbase cloud will close on October 15, 2025, which is about six months from now. We know that some of you rely on outerbase because it stands today, so we are leaving the open-source repository as they are.
If you want, you will still be able to do self-consciousness, and we will provide guidance to do so within our own Cloudflare account. Our main goal will be to ensure that the best parts of the outerbase are part of the cloudflair developer experience, so you do not have to make any option now (this will be clear!).
We have already thought a lot about how we are going to bring the best parts of the outerbase in D1, durable items, workflows and agents, and we are going to share a little about what will happen during Q2 2025, as the outbase team meets to work.
In particular, we will focus on the head-down:
-
Adopting powerful table viewers and query runner experiences for D1 and durable items (between many other things)!
-
Easy to start with durable items: Wrangler (our CLI tooling), to improve experience in cloudflair dashboard, and how you plug them from your client application
-
How do you imagine the situation of a workflow and thousands of workflow examples (thousands to millions!) You can have any time
-
Pre-and post-post-hooks for D1 that allow you to automatically register a handler that can work on your data
-
Bring in star API for D1, extending the existing rest API of D1, and adding website support – it becomes easy to use D1, even for applications hosted outside workers.
We have already started doing ground work for these changes. In the coming weeks, we will release an integrated data explorer for D1 and durable items that borrow heavy from the external interface you know.
Bring out the data explorer of outerbase into cloudflare dashboard
We will also tie some characteristics of Starbase directly into the platform of Cloudflare, so you can tap your existing D1 database and pre-durable objects and in its unique offerings like post-post-post-wake hooks or line safety:
const beforeQuery = ({ sql, params }) => {
// Prevent unauthorized queries
if (!isAllowedQuery(sql)) throw new Error('Query not allowed');
};
const afterQuery = ({ sql, result }) => {
// Basic PII masking example
for (const row of result) {
if ('email' in row) row.email = '(redacted)';
}
};
// Execute the query with pre- and post- query hooks
const { results } = await env.DB.prepare("SELECT * FROM users;", beforeQuery, afterQuery);
Define the hook on your D1 questions that can be re -used, shared and automatically executed before or after running your questions.
This should provide you more clarity and control over your data, as well as new ways to secure and customize it.
Relating to durable items is beginning to experience
Even we have started optimizing the cloudflare dashboard experience around the durable items and D1 to improve the blank condition, provide more starting resources, and overall, make their database resources even easier to manage and track their database resources. For those of you who have supported us, have responded to us, and as soon as we grew up, got stuck with us: Thank you. You have helped shape the outerbase what it is today. This acquisition means that we can pay even more resources and attention in the creation of the data experience we always want to distribute. We hope, by acting as part of the cloudflair, we can help intensifies the speed of innovation and create devices that naturally fit your workflows.
This is a big step for the outerbase, and we cannot be more excited. Thank you for being a part of our journey so far. We can't wait to show you what we have found in the store because we continue to make the data more accessible, comfortable and powerful – along with the cloudflair.
We are planning to work on some major changes to interact with our data on Cloudflare starting with D1 and durable items.
We will also ensure that we bring a great developer experience for a broad database and storage platforms on Cloudflare, in which how do you access data Worker K.V., R2, Workflow And even your AI agent (Just to name a few).
