Yadgir: A sudden and powerful storm accompanied by rain struck Karnataka’s Yadgir district, leading to a serious fire accident in Jallibenchi village of Surapura taluk. The incident was reportedly caused by a collision of high-tension electric wires due to heavy winds.

As the strong gusts hit the area in the evening, the main power lines supplying electricity to the village clashed, sparking a fire in the wires that run throughout the settlement. Residents, fearing the wires had fallen onto their homes, rushed outside in panic. Several houses are believed to have caught fire in the chaos.

The short circuit incident, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Surapura police station, left the entire area in shock. An old transformer center (TC) also received a surge after coming into contact with the live wires. A short circuit pole near the Mallikarjuna temple was severely damaged, and wires were snapped and scattered by the storm.

Reportedly, more than 100 houses suffered damage, with electrical appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, and fans completely destroyed. Two villagers identified as, Rayappa Pasaladi and Raja Ahmed, were injured in the electrical surge and were quickly taken to a hospital by their families.Both have suffered injuries and are out of danger now.

According to thr locals, the electric infrastructure in many villages of Surapura taluk is over 45 years old. The outdated and worn-out wires are increasingly vulnerable during storms, leading to dangerous incidents like this.

Villagers are now urging GESCOM officials to take immediate action to upgrade the electric lines and prevent further disasters.
