Govt initiates pilot projects to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Morth) has introduced five pilot projects to deploy hydrogen-operated buses and trucks as a part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Pilot projects will include 37 vehicles-15 hydrogen fuel cell-based and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based-and nine hydrogen fueling stations that will be tested on ten designated routes.

These routes included Greater Noida-Paul-Agra, Bhubaneswar-Konark-Uri, Ahmedabad-Vadodara-Urat, Sahibabad-Feridabad-Deli, Pune-Mumbai, Jamshedpur-Kollinga Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram-Koch, Kochi-Adeeple, Kochi-Adeeple, Judge-Adeeple, Judge-AADPPALE, Judge-AADPPALE and Municipal Visakhapatnam -Bayavaram.
Projects have been honored to key players, including Tata Motors Limited, Reliance Industries Limited, NTPC, Ert, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL and IOCL.

This initiative has a budget of Rs 208 crore from the Government of India. All projects are expected to be commissioned within the next 18 to 24 months.

The purpose of these pilots is to promote the development of commercially viable hydrogen-based technologies in the transport sector, especially for buses and trucks, with the manufacture of essential infrastructure such as hydrogen fuel-filling stations. On the social media platform X, Gadkari wrote, “These pilot initiatives display safe and efficient operations of hydrogen-operated vehicles, assess their technical performance, validate viability in real-world conditions, and evaluate economic viability-Choosing the foundation for mass adoptions.”
