Mumbai: According to a notification issued by the Finance Ministry on Friday, commercial ships with Indian -owned and flag will be provided ten thousand and up or up or above or Indian, ownership and flagged commercial ships will be provided with one thousand five hundred gross tons weight or more infrastructure.

The notification seen by ET Infra stops India’s ambition a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is on the bench of the Union’s Budget announced to become a global force in shipping from Bhavnagar in Gujarat on Saturday.

Large vessels above a specified size will be included in the harmonious master list in infrastructure, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitarman said that while presenting the Union Budget in Parliament on 1 February, admitting the long pending demand of local ship owners.

Since then, the ministries of finance and ports, shipping and waterways have been engaged in discussion to finalize the criteria to give fleet owners to the long -term, low -cost funds.

Hong Kong -based shipbuilding EPC Company, Steel Ships Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ranjan Varghese said, “India needs to empower banks such as how China did to become a global leader in shipping and shipbuilding many years ago.”

Shipbuilding, he said, is a high capital-intensive business. Dr. Varghese said, “Without finance, no ships are going to build. India needs finance and home-big ship owners. The government should promote the ship owners and ask them to make ships in India.”

According to a government document, India needs $ 18 billion in 2047 to become a global player in shipbuilding, ship repair and supporting industries. Whereas to increase the green tonne load requires India’s shipping ton load and another $ 388 billion to expand $ 260 billion.

India is less than 1 percent (0.06 percent) of the global shipbuilding market and is ranked 16th in the industry, but aims to break the top 10 rankings by 2030 and the top 5 by 2047. A uniform target has been set to make India a large ship.
