NHAI cuts GHG emissions despite 20% rise in highway construction, ET Infra

The report states that,

According to its stability report 2023-24, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has reduced the intensity of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in FY 2014 from 0.8 MTCO₂E/KM to 1.0 MTCO₂E/km in FY 2014.

Circular economy and resource management

NHAI stated that it used more than 631 lakh metric tons of recycling and reused materials in highway construction, including fly ash, plastic waste, and asphalt -reinforced asphalts. The Authority planted more than 58 lakh plants in FY 24 and 7 and.47 lakh saplings in 2024-25, which had exceeded a total of more than 7.79 million since the launch of the Green Highways policy in 2015. “This initiative has helped to create adequate carbon sinks and increase positive environmental stability with highways.”

Under the Amrit Sarovar Mission, NHAI has completed work on 467 water bodies across the country. According to the report, it has rejuvenated local water sources and has a yield of about 2.4 million cubic meters for construction, resulting in an estimated savings of ₹ 16,690 crore. The authority reported a 74 percent decrease in the intensity of water use in water-stool areas as compared to the previous year.

Task force and technology

The report stated that all direct staff and contract workers have been covered under business health and safety (OHS) management structure. It also noted zero examples of workplace discrimination. NHAI has implemented an AI-operated platform, Data Lake 3.0 to improve project management. The platform has helped solve 155 reconciliation claims with an estimated savings of around ₹ 25,680 crore. Separately, NHAI stated that 98.5 percent of Fastag penetration has helped reduce congestion and emissions at toll plazas.
